The first question you have to ask yourself when thinking about cutting your hair at home is, “Do you really need to cut your hair at home?” The harsh reality is that if you do it or the person you’re sharing your home with does it, there is a good chance it will get messed up. The good news is that it will grow back and no one will know… unless of course, you post the messed up cut online (and you totally should!). However, if you want to have a go at it, then here is what you need to know about cutting your hair at home. This applies to men, women, and kids.

Gear Up

The scissors you use to cut open a box or dice up a raw chicken isn’t the same kind of scissors you should be using on your hair. If you’re serious about this, then you should invest in a decent pair of hair-cutting scissors. For men, your electric razor might come with attachments for hair trimming. You should start with the max and then go to the minimum.

Get Help

Yes, you can cut your own hair but it is going to be a challenge especially when you do it in the mirror and have to contend with the reverse image in your reflection. That is why you might want to enlist help. Of course, the person you ask won’t have any experience either but you make it a team project, then it might generate a better cut.

Start Small

Until you gain confidence with making the cuts or shaves, you should start small. Go for the least amount possible. It is a lot like cooking. You only had a pinch of seasoning until you taste it and then you can add more. Cut a snip and if it works, then cut another snip.

Avoid Horizontal Lines

There are some styles of bangs that call for the straight horizontal line. For everyone else, you want to avoid those lines. Try holding your scissors up and down the length of your hair as opposed to across it and just make tiny snips. You’ve seen your hair stylist do this, right?

Go Section by Section

You want to divide your hair in sections. If it is long enough, then you can clip those sections to separate them. After snipping through one section move onto the next. If your hair is unruly, then mist it but don’t make it too damp.

Watch the Videos

It will also help to watch what is sure to be an endless number of online videos showing you how to cut your own hair. You can also practice on the kids. Like it or not, every kid will have a least one bad haircut in their life!
